Pathways Steiner Kindergarten

14 Larch St, Rotorua

07 348-9532

The idea to form Pathways Kindergarten was born in 1983. A small group of friends, mostly parents of young children, came together to share their thoughts and aims, especially with regard to education. They met regularly, doing craft work, reading together, talking about their families, while their children got acquainted, playing more or less peaceably. Some parents and older members of the group had made contact with Rudolf Steiner's writings and knew something of the schools already established in New Zealand.

They decided to work toward the founding of a kindergarten in Rotorua, working with the Steiner approach to child education. Steiner (1861-1925), an Austrian philosopher and scientist.

After they had spent a further year studying, exploring possibilities, and with increasing support, it seemed a start could be made.

A trained kindergarten teacher had returned to New Zealand and visited the group. The result was to open a kindergarten in 1985. In the space of three months, a house was purchased, with a little gift money and a large loan. A trust was formed, grounds and building were prepared, and with a roll of fifteen children, the kindergarten opened its doors.

To meet the needs of our community today, the Rotorua Rudolf Steiner playgroup has also been established for younger children. Further information for the playgroup is available from the teachers.

In 2006 a school initiative group evolved from the kindergarten families and they are working towards establishing a Steiner School in Rotorua.

The success of the kindergarten depends on the skill of the teachers, the support of the parents and friends, adequate funding and good management. The following outlines how each of these aspects can be achieved.

The Rotorua Steiner School Trust is incorporated under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957 and has charitable status for gifts and donations under the Finance Act. It collects and distributes any pledges, fees or donations paid to the kindergarten.
