The Mt Egmont Alpine Club (Inc) was formed in 1928 by Hawera identity Rod Syme. Membership quickly reached around 350. In those days the club focussed mainly on climbing, skiing and tramping.
The club built Syme Hut on top of Fanthams Peak in 1930, later Hooker Hut, Kapuni Lodge and the Search and Rescue HQ building at Dawson Falls. The Club has been involved in all aspects of Egmont National Park connected with Dawson Falls and the South side of the mountain.
