The Christchurch Folk Music Club, formed in 1968, has remained one of the most successful in the country and continues to thrive in spite of a forced change of venue due to earthquakes. We feature a wide range of entertaining music across a broad spectrum from blues to ballads, country to contemporary, Celtic to jazz. All styles are welcomed and encouraged. We vary our concerts and encourage local performers along, as well as regularly hosting international visiting artists and groups. This level of diversity brings to our audiences a broad range of musical experience, in addition to the myriad educational opportunities inherent in cultural exchange.

The Folk Club acknowledges the role of music as one of the most popular forms of leisure and relaxation across all realms of our society, given its broad appeal and the potential to break through language, generational and cultural barriers. Rhythm and the beat can get toes tapping from pre-schoolers right through to the fourth generation.

The Club aims to provide both a safe place to start performing in the public arena and a platform for the more sophisticated performers to showcase their work. It sees one of its major roles as that of a catalyst for musicians to further develop their performance skills. Two of its recent guest artists started their journey performing in the public domain at Club open mic evenings. Through the encouragement they received, they continued to foster their talents before returning to share their music at The Club where they were first pepper-corned.

The primary mission of the Folk Club is to provide all manner of live acoustic music to a seated, listening audience. Many seasoned artists have expressed their appreciation of the opportunity to perform to an audience respectful of their work.
