Basement Theatre

Backed by an ensemble of some of New Zealand’s finest theatrical talent, Sicko is set to explode onto the Basement Theatre stage this August, taking a drill to the dark heart of the Kiwi dream. Dripping in bitingly wicked humour and striking feats of magical realism.

"Word of warning though - this building is alive."

"Yeah, it seems like a real hive of activity."

"No. It's a living, breathing organism that grows upward like a plant. You can never get any closer to the top, just further from the bottom. It's intelligent, you see?"

Self-belief is in epidemically short supply. No matter your background, if you don't need more of the stuff you definitely know someone who does. Sicko is a love letter to anyone who could do to back themselves a little more. It’s a play about hope. About not settling for a life that’s less than you deserve. About not allowing all the colour to drain from your world. About the human soul, and having the courage to keep yours intact.

The debut play from writer Alex MacDonald, Sicko has been workshopped over an intensive year-long development process alongside some of our sharpest creative minds. This world premiere season is presented in collaboration with director Matt Baker (An Unseasonable Fall of Snow, The Lesson), actors Victoria Abbott (Run Rabbit, Othello - Pop Up Globe), Angella Dravid (The Breaker Upperers, Billy T Award Winner), Zak Enayat (There She Is, Status), Jason Hodzelmans (Westside, Titus), Chye-Ling Huang (Funny Girls, A War Story), Hamish Parkinson (Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Billy T Award Winner), and Ben Van Lier (The Bad Seed, In a Flash).

"Like the best looking person at an orgy, I don't know where to start."

"You're funny. In the same way someone falling over is funny. Sad funny."

"Life isn't short. It's instantaneous. Like a bolt of lightning, or a sneeze. Which one do you want to be?"
