The deep relaxation practice in this workshop is called yoga nidra, or psychic sleep. It was modified for use in our times by Swami Satyananda. This technique relaxes the whole person deeply as the brain is aware and yet in the state between that of waking and sleep, one hour of this practice being equivalent to 4 hours restful sleep.

In the workshop, a 20-minute long version and a 45-minute (to 1-hour) version of this practice are done. A popular technique, yoga nidra is utilised by many practitioners and teachers of yoga as well as in related fields such as therapy and counselling. Done lying down, there is no effort required.

The meditation practice taught is Ajapa Japa, involving breath awareness and silent repetition in the mind of the mantra that the sound of the breath emulates. This is taught in stages in the workshop; regular practice for 10+ minutes at least once a day at home, preferably twice a day, increases the benefits.

It is important to have a warm rug or blanket for relaxation that covers you sufficiently, as the metabolism slows and body cools after lying down for a few minutes.

This is not a yoga asana/postures class, so no warming up exercises or classical poses are done, just a few simple joint flexibility exercises and lung clearing exercises so that the body is more comfortable lying and sitting.

Alternate nostril breathing and ujjayi (throat) breath are taught as a preparation for meditation as they help to balance energies and internalise; they do not necessarily have to be continued at home during every practice session. Radhe (Swami Anandaradha) is currently based in the North Island in Whangarei and has taught yoga, relaxation and meditation practices for more than 35 years. A former director of Satyananda Ashram NZ Ltd, she is currently a trustee of Shraddha Yoga and Meditation and has a fulltime day job teaching Year 9 to 13 mathematics throughout Northland with Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (the correspondence school).
