To celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year, the Tauranga Art Gallery Toi Tauranga presents three unique exhibitions that reflect our past; paying homage to our ancestors and our indigenous history. The three exhibitions span the entire upper floor of the Gallery and open together on Saturday, 22 June 2019.

Hā: Lewis Tamihana Gardiner
22 June – 13 October 2019

Lewis Gardiner (Te Arawa, Ngāti Awa, Whanau a Apanui, Ngāi Tahu) is a leading pounamu artist who is attracted to working with jade for its solidity, beauty and ancestral connection. He is known for his unique design aesthetic, use of inlay and incorporating several varieties of jade in a single work to create depth and variety.

Blood Water Earth
Louise Potiki Bryant and Santee Smith
22 June – 6 October 2019

'Blood Water Earth' is an immersive video installation and ceramic display arising out of an international Indigenous collaboration between Kahnyen’kehàka artist Santee Smith (Artistic Director of Kaha:wi Dance Theatre) and Ngāi Tahu video/dance artist Louise Potiki Bryant.

Toured by Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery in partnership with the Auckland Arts Festival with support from Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, Kaha:wi Dance Theatre and Creative New Zealand.

Mātiro: A survey of photography by Kapua Joy Bennett
22 June – 13 October 2019

'Mātiro' (loving gaze) is the first survey of black and white photography by Tauranga-based Kapua Joy Bennett (Ngāti Ranginui, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui) who has been capturing Māori portraits for over three decades.

Supporting these exhibitions is a selection of art workshops for children and adults:

Matariki Drop-in Session for Families Saturday 29 June
10am – 12pm
Get creative with uku (clay) in the education studio. Entry: $2 per participant

Matariki Weaving Workshop
Sunday 7 July
10am – 12pm (children)
1pm – 3pm (adults)
Parewhati Taikato will teach workshop participants the art of weaving in the Tauranga Art Gallery education studio.
Entry: $20 per person

July School Holiday Programme
Week 1: 8–12 July
Week 2: 15–18 July
Programme 1: Children will explore different techniques to create their own printed artwork
Programme 2: Children will experiment with the art of whakairo (carving) using soap, paua and shells inspired by Gardiner’s pounamu (greenstone) work

Uku (clay) Workshop
Saturday 10 August
Workshop one: 10am – 12pm (ages 15+)
Workshop two: 1:30pm – 3:30pm (ages 15+)
For this hands-on and creative workshop, artist Linda Munn will teach participants pinch pot and coiling techniques to create small sculptures using uku (clay).
Entry: $35 per participant. Cost includes materials.

Matariki Children’s Art Studio Workshops
Thursdays 1, 8, 15 August
3:30pm – 5pm
Over three workshops your child will experiment with a variety of materials exploring landscapes, colour and texture. This exploration will form the basis of a landscape artwork with a sculptural element which has been inspired by Matariki.
Entry: $60 for 3 sessions
