The cello has always featured strongly in the International Akaroa Music Festival, and never more so than this year, when we present the inaugural concert of the Akaroa Festival Cello Orchestra, directed by acclaimed Melbourne cellist Alvin Wong. Tchaikovsky’s exquisite but fiendishly difficult Variations on a Rococo Theme will be a centrepiece in this eye-opening concert, and hearing the minimalist masterpiece ‘Symphony for Eight’ by America’s arguably most successful contemporary composer Philip Glass will be an emotionally engrossing experience. A cello-orchestra arrangement of Hans Zimmer’s famous themes from the Pirates of the Caribbean ends the concert on a note of swashbuckling fun.
