Fault rupture, strong ground shaking, liquefaction, sinking, uplift, and landslides are all major issues the Hutt Valley faces in large earthquakes. Recent research has identified and further characterised vulnerable zones around the Hutt Valley.

Russ Van Dissen is and earthquake specialist who has extensively studied the Wellington Fault and earthquake hazards in the Wellington region for the past several decades, he is also a leader to the It's Our Fault project.
