Doctor/writer Lisa Sanders on the advice patients often hear—especially when a diagnosis is serious or difficult—“get a second opinion”.

Lisa Sanders MD often focuses on the role of second opinions in figuring out the really hard-to-solve medical case studies she features in her New York Times column 'Diagnosis'. The column was the inspiration behind the hit television series 'House MD'.

This year she returns to television in a documentary series for Netflix. The series, also called Diagnosis, will use the most expansive version of a second opinion imaginable—asking the readers of the New York Times to read case histories and key medical records for 10 patients and give their opinion on the diagnosis or next steps in making the diagnosis.

The responses reveal much about what is sought in a second opinion and what they have to offer.

In this public lecture Sanders will look at some of the results from the patients she presented to readers and consider them in light of what is known and expected of second opinions.
