They regularly scour auctions catalogues and work with a network of contacts to develop Te Papa’s history collections. In this collection focused session, join History curators Katie Cooper, Stephanie Gibson and Claire Regnault for an insight into some of the team’s most exciting recent acquisitions.

Katie will explore a range of objects relating to New Zealand’s colonial history including a rare, annotated pattern book and an associated piece of early colonial furniture; Stephanie will talk about collecting the material culture of protest and activism, from the smallest of badges to protest on the catwalk, and Claire will highlight a selection of fashionable acquisitions, from New Zealand’s sporting history to Buckingham Palace.

Claire Regnault, Senior Curator New Zealand History & Culture, interests lie primarily in New Zealand’s fashion history and associated industries, including textile design, retail, marketing, publishing and photography, and 20th century and contemporary craft, in particular studio jewellery. Current research includes Te Papa’s 19th century dress collection, and the changing relationship between nature and clothing.

Stephanie Gibson, Curator Contemporary Life & Culture, is researching the material and visual culture of protest, conflict and reform, as well as everyday life in Aotearoa New Zealand. Her continuing museological research focuses on museums and community participation.

Katie Cooper, Curator History & Pacific Cultures, is researching the material culture of domestic life, focusing in particular on nineteenth-century New Zealand. She is also engaged in ongoing research into the social and cultural history of rural New Zealand.
