Rumoured to contain shrunken heads, ancient ceramics, secret scrolls, lost icons, talismans and all sorts of unique and long forgotten treasures…

...these Cabinets of Curios are said to harbour the most unusual of objects that together tell stories of the wonders and oddities of ancient worlds- albeit with a large dash of creative license!

‘The Cabinet of Curios’ is a two and a half hour workshop in visual arts, re-purposing materials and individual creativity for youth aged 10 yrs+ held at Rad Dunedin Studios on George St.

Focusing on the ways of working of various New Zealand contemporary artists this workshop will be inspired by the likes of Frances Upritchard and Peter Madden who often use found objects to create contemporary artworks. Participants will also be shown a variety of artistic methods and mediums to use in creating their own curio for display within ‘The Cabinet of Curios’.

Rad Studios predominantly uses salvaged or 'found' materials which spurs individual creativity and an appreciation of the three R’s: redesign, reuse and repurpose. Focus is placed on process over product and all artists will be encouraged to experiment and play with the materials in order to achieve interesting results. They will be given free rein to create their own curio which will reference an ancient culture.

Artworks will be later displayed together in a collaborative piece for exhibition.

Facilitators have many years of shared teaching experience and experience with working in the Arts. Rad Dunedin is a local art studio space, operated by Hannah Breeze (B.Ed with 11+ years of teaching experience) that provides various creative programs and resources for young, creative individuals aged 8-18.

Minimum age: 10 years old/ Maximum age: 18 years old
