YĀTRĀ (Journey) takes you through a rich tapestry of Sri Lankan folk music - from the mystical sounds of Nurti, later influences from Hindustani & Karnatic schools from neighbouring India, to 1970's funky pop, to Afro-Portuguese inspired, high energy Cafrinha & Baila rhythms! Guaranteed to entertain.

The musical siblings Rachel & Jason who grew up in West Auckland, hail from the city of Kandy in the Central Province - the spiritual capital of Sri Lanka and the seat of the Island's last kingdom which held out against both the Portuguese and the Dutch, eventually annexed to the British Crown in 1815. With only a few decades between the signing of the Kandyan Convention and the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 - Sri Lankan culture shares a similar historical heritage with Aotearoa New Zealand. Music kept their roots deep and YĀTRĀ becomes the first of a series of future events where the duo will be showcasing Sri Lankan music in an Aotearoa urban context.

Rachel & Jason are backed by the master musician Basant Madhur of the Sargam School of Indian Music, Auckland - with a team of veteran musicians, and the local Sri Lankan pop legends - Dragonz - featuring guest artists.

Spanning a few decades, several styles and moods, YĀTRĀ is bound to create intrigue, bring back some great memories and a great intro for a novice to Sri Lankan culture. Join the journey and let the music speak.
