As an X-Generation individual, I’ve had a lifetime of listening to a wide range of music including Dance, Trance, Acid house, Hip-hop, Grunge, Dub, Punk & other club music. As I approach 50 years of age I still have the same enthusiasm to play and move to these beats. And I know I’m not alone in this.
Dancehall (also Reggaeton, Soca, Flamenco etc) has become the focus of my dance instruction in recent years, specialising in choreographies for adults who have little or no dance training or experience.

Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music that is a fusion of Hip-hop & Jamaican Ska and Reggae that originated in the late 1970s.

Do you still enjoy the Hip-hop and dance music you grew up listening too in the 80s & 90s? Come and take part in a workshop where basic moves to great music are taught. In this workshop, you’ll learn a short, easy choreography that’s authentic to its Dancehall roots. The movements in class will be straightforward and accessible to all. Hilary has been teaching easy dance fitness to adults in the Tasman region for several years and is an NZ registered exercise professional (REPs) and a member of Dance Aotearoa (DANZ).

About Hilary:
I really enjoy teaching folks to move to the beat.

It wasn’t until I was in my forties I decided to learn how to be a teacher of basic dance moves. I chose my favourite genres including Flamenco, Hip-hop, and Dancehall.

Learning a series of moves when you’re older, I’ve discovered, is harder than when you’re physically young. Your head and body experience new challenges. I have attended workshops of hip-hop, Swagg, and Dancehall in NZ & abroad. What is clear is that these workshops often don’t cater for folks 40+ or for those without prior dance experience.

I felt like a lot of ace individuals were missing out. So I decided to teach. As the Dancehall genre becomes more popular, I hope people of any background can feel able to take part.
I wish to make Dancehall moves accessible to anyone, any age with a keenness to give it a go.
