The Whangarei Sculpture Symposium is a unique event held in Northland. The 2018 event will run from 12 March until 22 March once again on Hihiaua Peninsular.

For 2018, artists are invited to create a form that relates to ‘Journey’. Based on first encounters, exploring and navigating. This year also inspired by the Sestercentennial 250th anniversary of the voyage of the Endeavour captained by Lieutenant James Cook, which commemorates his exploration of our coast.

When life ends, life will begin anew whether it’s through reincarnation or the beginning of someone else’s journey, life continues on. These experiences can by physical, natural or historical influences which inspire the design of the sculpture.

The sculpture must interpret a local influence and the theme of journeys; the aesthetic form is key and will be part of the judging criteria.

At the end of the symposium one piece will be selected and awarded $6,000 with the sculpture to be installed in a public space within the Whangarei District. A second prize of $4,000 is offered in 2018, with this sculpture to be located in the Bay Of Islands to mark the celebrations of Captain Cook’s voyage of discovery 250 years ago. A $500 People’s Choice cash prize will also be awarded.

All remaining sculptures will be auctioned onsite with a 25% commission payable to Creative Northland. Unsold artworks remain the property of the artist, however any sale of works within a six month time-frame of the end of the symposium or any work directly commissioned through the participation of the symposium; will be subject to a Creative Northland commission.

In 2016, artists were invited to create a form that relates to the theme of Migration. The symposium was held for 10 days between the 29th of February and the 9th of March 2016. This event was open to the public and held at the Hihiaua Peninsular, a park commonly used by walkers, runners and family groups and therefore attracted an estimated 6500-8000 people over the 9 day, with 10-15% repeat visitors.

At the end of the symposium, Rex O’Brien was the recipient of this award and his sculpture is now installed at the Whangarei Art Park on the Hatea Loop. Greg Maddox won the Quest Peoples Choice Award with his piece Poukaia, a dramatic driftwood eagle.
