‘TOCCATA’ has for centuries been used as a title for keyboard showpieces; exuberant music which displays both organ and organist. But music using the name covers a wide range of musical styles.

In this concert Dunedin’s City Organist, David Burchell, contrasts two of the most famous Toccatas – by Bach and Widor – with lesser-known and widely varied pieces from composers such as Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Dietrich Buxtehude and Pablo Bruna from the seventeenth century, and twentieth-century organists Francis Jackson and Frigyes Hidas.

The Dunedin Town Hall organ is internationally recognised as one of the best preserved examples of a concert organ of its era. Its extensive tonal variety is enhanced by the excellent Dunedin Town Hall acoustic, and the sheer power and depth of the instrument is thrilling.

A regular performer on this instrument for nearly twenty years, David Burchell will exploit the instrument’s potential to the full in this exciting programme.
