Art-dealer Peter McLeavey spent more than 40 years running his gallery in the centre of Wellington. In “The Man in the Hat” McLeavey talks about his life - including his peripatetic childhood around the North Island as the son of an Irish Catholic railway worker, his early love of art, his determination from age 12 to visit Europe, discovering his New Zealand identity whilst living in London and returning home to contribute to the country's culture as one of its outstanding art dealers.

During the address for McLeavey’s Honorary Doctorate, Professor of Art Jeremy Diggle described him as “the most important commercial gallerist New Zealand has ever had, effectively the pre-eminent publisher of modern New Zealand art in the part 50 years.” His eponymous gallery, on Cuba Street, is the longest-lived in New Zealand.

Catch the exhibition “Peter McLeavey and the Last Photograph” at the Adam Art Gallery, on until 20 December, 2018.
