Depicting the trials and tribulations that faced early Scottish migrants in the late 1800s when they set out for their new life in Dunedin.

Robert Scott and Michael McLeod have teamed up to perform original music that will provide the backdrop, or soundtrack, to a selection of narrations. A broad group of local writers were commissioned to create stories or poems, loosely based on fact. These writings have either been turned into songs that will be sung by Robert or Michael, or have been pre-recorded and will be accompanied by live music.

The stories will describe the difficult conditions the migrants faced aboard the ships during their long voyage; they'll tell of disease, hunger, loneliness, despair and, the anticipation of finally arriving on a foreign shore to a new beginning...a new hope. For early settlers, song was one of the few things they had to help them along their journey through life, it was a very important way of sharing feelings and memories. To fit the mood of the stories, much of the musical pieces are presented in folk style as was typical for the settlers.

For the show's duration, various still/moving images will be projected onto a screen to further contribute to the overall feel. Robert and Michael have a long and varied connection as part of the NZ and local music scene, playing in many bands, such as: The Alpha State, The Bats, The Clean, Shifting Sands, and many others. They have a long history of artistic and collaborative endeavours, this project is a new chapter in their careers.

The Journey: From Ayr to Here is also showing on Saturday 10 March at the Dunedin Musicians Club, please see separate listing to purchase tickets.
