Experience your city in new ways and have fun on streets that are opened for people and closed to cars.

Te Ara Tapere ki Pōneke (Open Streets in Wellington) is a free, fun, active event for everyone. On a 1.4km route from Hunter Street to Jessie Street via Victoria, Wakefield, lower Cuba, Dixon and Taranaki streets, people of all ages and abilities can take over the streets and walk, play, ride and roll in places where it's not usually safe or possible.

Community groups will be running activities that anyone can have a go at. Some of these will be at our activity hubs and you'll find other things to try along the way. Have a go at saying hello in te reo Māori or Arabic, outdoor yoga, a kids' scooter obstacle course, or making your own reusable bag.

We're also inviting businesses along the route to be out on the street, even if they don't usually open on a Sunday.

Open Streets events are held regularly in other cities around the world. Here in Wellington, we're giving it a go for the first time in the central city.

The streets on the route will be closed from 6am to 3pm on Sunday 28 October. We encourage you to plan ahead. Parking restrictions will be in place from 12 midnight on Saturday 27 October until 3pm on Sunday 28 October. If you're a resident on these streets, we encourage you to park on nearby side streets. You'll receive information about this in the mail.

Street Closures 6am-3pm, bus route diversions.

We encourage you to plan ahead. These streets will be closed to all vehicles from 6am to 3pm and traffic management will be in place:
- Victoria Street (Hunter to Wakefield)
- Wakefield Street (Victoria to Cuba)
- Cuba Street (Wakefield to Manners)
- Dixon Street (Cuba to Taranaki)
- Inglewood Place
- Ghuznee Street (Taranaki to Marion)
- Taranaki Street (Dixon to Jessie).
- Manners Street (Taranaki to Cuba) will be bus-only.

If you are driving into the city on 28 Oct please use alternative routes. We suggest via the Quays if you are coming from the North & if you're coming from the East or South, use Kent & Cambridge Tce.

Diversions will be in place for bus routes 3 and 21 - check the details on Metlink - https://www.metlink.org.nz/service-updates/open-streets-18-routes-3-18e-21-diverted-as-foot-traffic-takes-over-cbd-roads-on-sunday-28-october

(Parking restrictions will be in place from 12 midnight on Saturday 27 October until 3pm on Sunday 28 October.

Check out the route map for more info - there's no start or finish - you can go in any direction or join in at any point along the way. There will be eight activity hubs where you can try a range of free activities.
