Rotorua Museum will host a free Matariki korero (talk) with acclaimed Māori astronomer Dr Rangi Mātāmua (Ngai Tūhoe).

A senior lecturer at the School of Māori and Pacific Development at Waikato University, Dr Mātāmua has undertaken significant research in the areas of Māori language revitalisation, Māori culture, Māori astronomy and broadcasting. He has also produced a number of publications in his specialist areas, and sits on several related boards including the Society for Māori Astronomy Research and Traditions (SMART).

Last year he published the book Matariki: The Star of the Year which was popularly received.

Matariki is a cluster of nine stars (also known as Pleaides) which reappear in the Southern skies during the cold months of winter signalling the beginning of the Māori New Year.

The talk will take place in the Nina Hogan Performing Arts Centre, Rotorua Girls High School, 251 Old Taupo Road, Rotorua. Due to limited seating available this year, advance bookings for this free talk are required through Eventfinda.

Doors will open at 5.30pm and the talk will start at 6pm, concluding with a question and answer session after the talk.
