We’re releasing a pair of takahē on Rotoroa Island and you’re invited!

Come and experience release of a breeding pair of takahē on predator free Rotoroa Island, a rare opportunity to view these birds ‘up close and personal’.

Thought to be extinct, takahe were rediscovered in 1948. In the last 70 years there has been extraordinary efforts by DoC’s Takahē Recovery Programme to ensure the takahē is never again threatened with extinction.

With only 376 takahē in existence, this will be an special chance to witness conservation in action..

Event is free, but usual ferry ticket pricing applies.

08:45 - Ferry from Auckland to Rotoroa Island
10:15 - Welcome, biosecurity briefing, talk about Takahē Recovery Programme
Free to explore Rotoroa Island
12pm - Walk to Cable Bay where takahē release is held
12:45pm - Takahē release (approximate timing)
Free to explore Rotoroa Island
5:15pm - return ferry departs Rotoroa Island for Auckland

Getting to Rotoroa Island
360 Discovery ferries depart from downtown Auckland to Rotoroa Island at 8.45am. The trip takes just over an hour, with a stop-off at Waiheke's Orapiu wharf on the way to Rotoroa Island.

You can also get to Rotoroa Island by ferry from Coromandel.

What to bring
- Your own food and plenty of water as there are no shops on the island
- Walking shoes, sunblock and a sun hat
