Stand Up Paddling Open Day to Enhance Health and Wellbeing.

Bring your friends and family along to Judges Bay next Saturday morning (27th October, 8am-12pm) to 'have a go' at SUP, try a Beach Challenge fitness workout with PaddleFit, relax with SUP Yoga, explore into Hobson Bay, demo new season Starboard boards or have some crazy fun with SUP Ball, with Starboard, SUPWell Coaches Victoria Stuart and Helen Blair, and graduates of the PaddleOn SUP Rehabilitation Program.

PaddleOn Cancer Rehabilitation Program information and Signups will be available, as well as information about the Paddle For Hope Fundraising Events. Information and registrations open at 8:00am. Some activities need to be pre-booked. If any activities are fully booked, it may still be possible to join in if you are bringing your own board.

All activities on the day are free, thanks to SUPWell and Starboard NZ.

Beginners welcome, no prior experience is required and all equipment will be provided. Seasoned stand up paddlers are also welcome and you can bring your board or try out something new!

Event schedule:
8:00am-12:00pm Starboard New Season Board Demos
8:00am-12:00pm Have a go at SUP (20min)
8:30-9:00am PaddleFit Complete Beach and Water Circuit
9:45-10:15am SUP Yoga
10:30-11:00am Explore Paddle
11:00am 12:00pm SUPBall (10min, 4-player teams)

Please allow 10min before your session begins to gear up. We recommend you bring a water bottle and wear quick-dry active wear (shorts or leggings, polyester/merino layers) over togs and bring a towel and something warm to put on afterwards.

Booties or reef shoes are recommended as there can be sharp objects underfoot at Judges Bay. Have-a-go sessions will run at 20min intervals, and you may need to wait for a turn.

Stand Up Paddling (SUP) could be your answer to a number of modern life challenges, whether you’re recovering from injury, a cancer diagnosis, or simply trying to reduce stress and live a more healthy lifestyle, says SUPWell Coach Helen Blair, who quit her corporate job three years ago to become a Stand Up Paddle Instructor, and has experienced first-hand the health benefits.

“Where we exercise has a big impact on what we get out of it, and a natural environment makes exericse way more enjoyable for many people,” says Blair.

“A number of studies show that being on the water enhances mental wellbeing by reducing stress and anxiety and increasing calm, focus and creativity. Our clients often comment that they feel their whole state of wellbeing change for the better when they push off from the shore. And who doesn't need a bit of mindful exercise these days?”

The event is suitable for people of all ages, abilities and energy levels, and experienced paddlers are also encouraged to bring along their own boards and paddle with others.

The Open Day is also helping to generate interest in the Paddle For Hope fundraising events, which raise money to help Pinc and Steel Cancer Rehabilitation Trust fund the delivery of the PaddleOn SUP Rehabilitation Program.

PaddleOn SUP Instructor Victoria Stuart says the PaddleOn program, which helps people affected by cancer to learn to stand up paddle, can be life-changing.

“Participants regain confidence in their physical abilities, and get to experience all the wellbeing benefits of that magic ingredient, water. It's good for people who are recovering from cancer treatments, but also for people living with cancer. I see them grow so much over the four week program.”

Next weekend’s event is being hosted by SUPWell and Starboard NZ, with the help of PaddleOn graduates, as an introduction to stand up paddling or a way to meet and connect with other stand up paddlers in the community.

SUPWell offers classes and programs to help people learn and improve their paddling, be fit on the water, rehabilitate from cancer treatment and explore waterways. It also offers team building and wellbeing events (Better Teams).
