Russia, politics, coded messages, and complimentary Champagne in Auckland’s newest, and perhaps most beautiful, chamber music venue: the glass-walled, copper-roofed Bishop Selwyn Chapel.

Shostakovich’ wrote his Eighth Quartet in Dresden when the Cold War was at its coldest, where he had gone to write music for a film about the city’s bombing during World War II. This quartet is a musical autobiography, in which the composer quotes from his earlier works as he reflected on a life lived in the face of terror and oppression.

The Tsar’s ambassador asked Beethoven to include a Russian theme in each of the quartets he commissioned. He fulfilled his contractual obligation among music that is among the composer's quirkiest and most original.

- Beethoven - String Quartet No. 7 in F major “Razumovsky”, OP. 59, No. 1.
- Shostakovich - String Quartet No. 8 in C minor "to the victims of fascism and the war".
