Remembering Armistice: The Influenza Pandemic – Film and Panel Talk.

Watch a new half-hour documentary directed by Tuki Laumea about the traumatic effect of the 1918 influenza pandemic in Sāmoa. Then hear a panel discussion about the flu’s legacy in New Zealand and Sāmoa – especially its uneven impact on health, society, and culture.

The 1918 influenza outbreak:
In November 1918, World War I ended and New Zealand celebrated the Armistice. The jubilant mood was undercut by the widespread sickness and death left in the wake of the so-called ‘Spanish flu’.
No other disaster has killed so many New Zealanders in such a short window of time. The flu had a devastating impact on Māori, who were seven times more likely than Europeans to die from it.

In Sāmoa, then under New Zealand administration, the disease claimed almost a third of the population. It arrived on one ship from Auckland, which was allowed to disembark in early November 1918.

Panellists:
Dr Bronwyn Labrum (chair), Head of New Zealand and Pacific Cultures, Te Papa
Linda Bryder, historian specialising in the social history of medicine, University of Auckland
Tuki Laumea, journalist and documentary filmmaker

Film Screening:
'Talune: The ship of death' is a 30-minute documentary looking into a little known event in Samoa and Aotearoa's history 100 years ago, when a quarter of the Samoan population died in a preventable influenza epidemic under New Zealand's watch. Through a series of re-enactments and interviews, the piece explores the extraordinary events around the bureaucratic bungle that caused so many deaths, and the impact this event had on Samoa for the century to come.
