Moniek Schrijer's exhibition Heart of the Golden Sun features the body of work she made responding to the three months she spent in Xiamen, China, as the 2017 Asia New Zealand Foundation/Wellington City Council WARE artist in residence.

“The transformative potential of used and often discarded materials fuels my practice, exploring notions of time and timelessness, the known and unknown," Schrijer says.

"I am drawn to attributes in items that are reflections of the past, imaginings of the future and observations of the everyday. I am a collector of symbols and signifiers... I riff on these, working with ideas of technology, architecture and contemporary culture. I make expressive work using a wide variety of matter and process.”

Schrijer is a contemporary jeweller based in Wellington. Since completing a Bachelor of Applied Arts and a Post Graduate Diploma in Jewellery from Whitireia NZ, she has been the recipient of numerous awards and residencies.

Her most notable accolades include the 2016 Herbert Hofmann Preis and the 2015 Françoise van den Bosch artist in residence. Moniek has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally in group and solo exhibitions, and her work is held in the collection of Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand, The Dowse Art Museum and Espace Solidor, France.
