Biography:
Modi Deng is a pianist from Dunedin studying a Bachelor of Music (Honours) with Rae de Lisle, together with a Bachelor of Arts in English. In March, she received first prize in the National Concerto Competition, performing Rachmaninov’s Concerto No. 3 with Benjamin Northey and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

As the 2016 and 2018 Haydn Staples Piano Scholar, Modi has appeared with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and the APO Summer School Orchestra. She has also performed concerti by Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Chopin and Rachmaninov with the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra under conductors Werner Andreas Albert and Nicholas Braithwaite, and youth and collegiate orchestras.

Modi has enjoyed learning in masterclasses given by artists and teachers such as Michael Houstoun, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, Kathryn Stott and Stephen Hough.

Modi has received a variety of prizes including a 2015 Arts Blue, the Sebastian Black Prize in English, and a Dame Malvina Arts Major Foundation award during her studies. Prior to university, Modi was runner-up in the New Zealand Young Performer of the Year awards and Co-Dux of Columba College.

An avid chamber musician, her trio recently toured the U.K. in July 2018 as the winner of the Pettman/ROSL Arts Chamber Music Arts scholarship. They performed as part of Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the British Isles Music Festival, and for audiences at St Martin-in-the-Fields and St James’s Church, Piccadilly.
