Born in New Zealand in what is known colloquially as the “deep south”, it is fitting that Matt found his feet as a songwriter in a genre of music that was born in the Deep South of the USA. Whilst these far-flung regions have little in common in terms of climate - the former sometimes bitterly cold where the latter is sultry heat - they both share a rich musical history, and Matt absorbed both growing up. Matt released his first record The Messenger in 2009. Produced by multi-ARIA award-winner Nash Chambers and featuring Jim Moginie of Midnight Oil and iconic Australian country artist Bill Chambers, it was recorded at the legendary Sing Sing Studios in Melbourne and released on Liberation Records.

“Back when we released The Messenger, the musical landscape in Australia was not as fleshed out in regards to Americana or alt-country and I think things have changed since then,” - Matt says.

During the long break between The Messenger and Seven Years, Matt took a hiatus from music and the city life and retreated to St Leonards, a quiet seaside town. It was here in somewhat isolation that Matt wrote the majority of his second album "Seven Years”. A year or so later, re-energised by the process of making that album, the positive reception it received (the album was nominated for a Victoria Music Award) and a tour with musical mentor Grant Lee Phillips, Matt was eager to launch into making another record.

Building on the musical direction of the previous two records and yet forging its own unique place in the Matt Joe Gow canon, Break, Rattle and Roll ranges from the Stones-esque rock and roll to the hushed heartbreak of songs like 'Old Hotel Room”. The album features guest spots from popular Melbourne acts The Weeping Willows and Gretta Ziller as well as Katya Harrop who also appeared on Seven Years.

Tickets are $10
