What happens if you don’t market your business effectively?


And that’s the problem. ‘Nothing!’ happens to small businesses all too often. And that stops them becoming bigger businesses.

Usually, it’s because they don’t know how to market and promote themselves effectively. Sometimes, it’s because they spend their limited marketing budgets on the wrong marketing activities.

If you have a team, it’s because they don’t have the time to sit down and plan things properly.

So the marketing either does not get done at all, or it’s done on an ad hoc basis when sales lag and things are a bit slow.

The PR Company has been working in ‘marketing communications’ and public relations for 30 years, designing and implementing consumer-facing campaigns for both Government and private sector organisations.

We learned very early on that ‘fancy’ and ‘expensive’ does not always equal ‘great results’. Usually, there are just four things that can go wrong in marketing:
- The product is shonky
- You’re talking to the wrong people
- The message is wrong
- The message isn’t being delivered properly and isn’t getting through
- This workshop is about getting those four things right! Because if you do, ‘nothing’ won’t happen to your business.

This workshop is interactive – you share your thoughts and ideas with others and you learn from them, too, about what works for them. You should leave this workshop with practical ideas that you can implement in your own business.

Although this is run by Chrysalis for Women, men are welcome.

Presenter Bio – Daniel Paul
Daniel has over 30 years’ experience in strategic marketing communications and PR roles. He has worked in senior positions in both the public and private sectors. His experience includes projects with some of New Zealand’s higher profile companies.

He also co-ordinated and led the government’s communications response to the 2001 hydro crisis, achieving the then Minister’s goal of 10% energy savings within six weeks. This entailed a comprehensive programme of publicity and marketing that encouraged Kiwis to cut their power use by 10%. He also managed all the publicity and marketing for the launch of one of the first inter-Island fast ferry services.

Before working with government he co-owned one of the few public relations consultancies to have offices in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. On leaving the public sector, he established another consultancy which morphed into The PR Company

Daniel has a particular interest in strategic communications planning, media management and marketing communications. He has chaired the central region committee of the Public Relations Institute for several years and sat on the Institute’s National Council and is regularly asked to speak at industry events, to address new entrants to the industry and to mentor junior practitioners.
