Join Historian Michael Fowler for a talk on the history of the Marine Parade from 1928 to 1938.

The 10-year period from 1928 to 1938 saw the beginnings of what has been called Napier’s playground. A not very well-known fact is that reclamation of the foreshore had begun before the 1931 Hawke’s Bay Earthquake gifted land on the foreshore.

Michael’s talk will look at the conflicts that arose during the post-quake era – with many not wanting any buildings at all on the reclaimed foreshore. And will look at how the Soundshell, Veronica Bay, Tom Parker Fountain and Napier Arch all came into existence.
