Loy Krathong (a floating basket) is a Siamese festival celebrated annually throughout the Kingdom of Thailand and in nearby countries. It is one of the most important days in the Thai calendar.

Loy literally means 'to float,' while krathong refers to the lotus-shaped receptacle which can float on the water. Loy Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar.

In the western calendar this usually falls in November, which is the 'high water' season when water overflows the banks of rivers and canals.

Experience the Thai culture through the flavours of sights and sounds of Thailand at the Loy Krathong Festival on Sunday 25 November 2018.

At the Festival members of Wellington’s Thai community perform and showcase traditional and contemporary Thai culture. The Festival includes non-stop stage entertainment, exhibitions, Thai street food market, costume competition, and cultural workshop. The event is organised by the Royal Thai Embassy and The New Zealand Thai Community Inc. and is sponsored by Wellington City Council.

The food trucks (caravans) and private stallholders will be trading a range of Thai traditional cuisine at the Te Ngākau Civic Square, in Wellington from 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

We would like to integrate and sharing the knowledge with you at your Wellington CBD, so Come down to join us and let float the Krathong together!
