Lights over Marlborough is the annual Whitney Street School fireworks display held in November each year at Marlborough’s A&P Showgrounds and is the school’s major fundraiser for the year. This year marks the event’s 35 year anniversary with local musician Mitch Alderlieste headlining the music entertainment.

In 2018 Lights Over Marlborough will be held on Saturday 17 Nov (postponement 18 November) with gates opening 6pm. This year funds raised will be going towards resources for innovative learning practices at Whitney Street School.

An established and much-anticipated event in the Marlborough community calendar, Lights Over Marlborough started from small beginnings as a fireworks display in the school grounds and has grown to become one of the largest public fireworks display in the community calendar, with close to 5,000 people attending Lights Over Marlborough each year. Each year the fireworks display is delivered by Fireworks New Zealand.

Gates at the A&P Showgrounds open at 6pm with food and entertainment including a performance by Whitney Street School’s Kapa Haka group, a silent auction with an incredible line up of items, and a huge choice of side-line activities and stalls, all preceding the headlining fireworks display.

Crowd favourites the Chocolate Wheel, candy floss and Bouncy Castle will be back. A large range of food will also be available to purchase and non-alcoholic drinks can be purchased from most hot food stalls, with free water on site.

In 2017 the school offered pre-sales of entry tickets, which worked well.

The best way to find out the cost of tickets, stay up to date with what to expect on the night and to be in the chance to win free family passes or to learn of any postponement details, is by following the event’s Facebook page (@LightsOverMarlborough). Regular posts on competitions, sponsors, activities and food/drink stalls will be posted between now and November.

Organisers encourage families to come along early at 6pm and enjoy the pre-fireworks food and atmosphere.
