This introductory level one day workshop introduces the use of Adobe Illustrator software as a design tool for laser cutting a range of materials including fabric, leather and wood. Participants will create their own designs, which will then be processed on the 3D Printing Lab’s laser cutter during the afternoon session.

Workshop presenters:
- Damen Joe
Damen is a graduate from AUT University, having studied for his Master’s Degree in Visual Art and Design. With a strong interest in working between both digital and handmade imagery, upon graduation he went on to teach at AUT and Unitec as a lecturer in both computer aided design and printmaking. Damen's interests continue to span a wide variety of media: from preserving centuries old manuscripts and books; freelance design; to creating and exhibiting full digital artworks.

- Ross Jacobs
Ross is our 3D Printing Lab Technician, with many years’ practical experience in mechanical design from automotive to aviation. Ross has spent the last 3 years honing his skills in the additive manufacturing and research world working on some of the country’s most advanced 3D printing technology.

Workshop content:
The workshop covers essential Adobe Illustrator skills including an understanding of vector images, creating basic and complex shapes, transformation, and combining paths. The course will also include examples of design approaches and provide guidelines for creating original laser cut artwork. Participants will apply the skills they have learned to create their own original designs, which will be laser cut with selected materials at the 3D Printing Lab. The laser cutter is the ideal tool for cutting a range of materials with ultimate precision. With a kerf width of 60 microns, extremely intricate designs can be achieved.

Learning outcomes:
- Gain an understanding of the essential Adobe Illustrator functions for laser cutting.
- Use Adobe Illustrator software tools to create and develop original designs.
- Gain an understanding of file formatting for laser cutting.
- Be introduced to laser cutting technology, processes and workflow.

Participant requirements:
Competent computer skills are the only prerequisite for this course. No prior knowledge of Illustrator or laser cutting technology is necessary. Following the workshop, it is recommended that participants have some access to Adobe Illustrator in order to gain the full benefit from this workshop.

What to bring:
Materials are provided but please bring refreshments with you for morning and afternoon breaks and lunch. There are several cafes in the locality that cater for all dietary requirements.

Two options: Workshop fee or full-time student fee.
