Contra: 'A most outrageously fun dance.' (attributed to St Michael of Kelburn).

Feat. a raucous, foot-stompin' line-up of a band!:
- Bernard Wells - piano
- Gillian Gillies - fiddle
- Megan Ward - banjo
- Mark Howell - hammered dulcimer
- Reuben Jelleyman - accordion.

Special guest caller Robert W Perry from Lawton, Oklahoma (via Hastings) plus local callers.

We're gathering the village together for a special night of folk dancing. No need to bring a partner or dancing experience to this incredibly enjoyable dance! There is a gender-neutral trend and contra dance has never been one woman dancing solely with one man. In a 4-person set, all four dancers interact with each of the other three dancers. The caller will walk everyone through each dance before we dance it.

There will be a supper - if you bring it! Consider bringing a plate or a cold drink to share.

But! if you can't afford the going entry - we'd love you to still come, and give koha if you can!

About: Contra started in New England, US, in the 1930s and has spread throughout world. It has mixed origins from English and Scottish country dance, and French dance styles in the 17th century.

Contra Dancing is a 'called' dance (we teach and guide you), and usually danced in long lines facing each other. (Contra) Dancers swap partners progressively through the dance, so everyone meets and dances with everyone in their opposite line.

Dances are made up of combinations of 6 - 12 figures eg. right hand star, do si do, ladies’ chain, allemande etc. The footwork is easy walking pace and requires no special dance ability.
