The establishment of community based preschool provision in Manawatū 1939-1979.

The birth of organised community-based preschool provision in Manawatu occurred in Feilding in 1938 with the opening of the region’s first nursery play centre. Kindergarten provision followed later in Palmerston North with the establishment in 1943 of a kindergarten association.

The 1960s saw the emergence of organised childcare provision in the region. Each service rose and grew in response to a particular set of needs and beliefs about the care and education of young children shaped in part around the prevailing idea that women should be educated through close association with the preschool education of their children.

Speaker: Kerry Bethell
Second Floor, Central Library/tea and coffee provided.
