Housing public meeting led by James Berghan, Monday 26 November from 7pm at the Pacific Island Advisory Cultural Trust Hall (PIACT) at 135 Bowmont St.

“Optimal housing designs and urban planning layouts are no guarantee for the long-term success and well-being of communities. Recognising this, communities from around the world have sought to introduce social and cultural aspects of design, community and cohesion – with varying degrees of success.

Join us for a whirlwind virtual tour of a range of alternative housing models from across the country and around the world, before we bring the focus back to the South where we will brainstorm blue-skies housing ideas for our future.”

The speaker James Berghan (Te Rarawa, Te Aupouri) is a Licensed Cadastral Surveyor and PhD Candidate at the National School of Surveying at the University of Otago. His research is part of National Science Challenge 11: Building Better Homes, Towns and Cities, and focuses on building ‘community’ in housing developments.

In particular, he is looking at how different principles of traditional tribal communalism are expressed in contemporary developments.
