A somewhat lighthearted lecture on the intersection of the Gothic & the horrifying with Marxist theory.

From the burning of 'witches' and the incomprehensible terror of the Black Death; to the way modern capitalism creates new monsters and the resort to the monstrous that people must retreat to in order to understand the worst aspects of the modern world. Horror can play a role in the way people understand their role in the struggle for a better society, while Halloween can prove the spark for spontaneous unrest.

This lecture will focus primarily on elements of monstrous imagery present in socialist literature since the early days of socialism, and the ways in which using monstrous imagery can help to understand the world as it exists today as well as communicate socialist theory. As with all our lectures, this event is free to all and will be a retirement to a nearby pub or cafe for post-lecture drinks.
