Frank Talbot Quartet feat. Brad Kang & Hamish Smith

Frank Talbot - Saxophone
Brad Kang - Guitar
Hamish Smith - Bass
Sam MacKenzie - Drums

New Zealand Saxophonist Frank Talbot is excited to collaborate with NZ Jazz great and guitar virtuoso Brad Kang, who released his debut album at last year's Jazz Festival, was a leading player in Texas and a member of the world-renowned One O Clock Lab Band.

Also visiting is bassist and long time collaborator Hamish Smith, who has recently returned from a spell in New York where he worked under the guidance of Matt Brewer, Ben Street and Matt Penman, while playing with some of the great jazz artists in the city. Both Hamish and Frank are soon leaving for Macedonia to tour Europe with the prestigious JM Jazz World Orchestra. The pair first met as finalists of the 2015 NZSM Improvisation Competition, and quickly became good friends whom have enjoyed playing together since.

Originally from Auckland, Frank Talbot quickly became a name on people's lips when he moved to Wellington in 2016 for his pyrotechnics and strong, projecting sound, having played lead alto and tenor with the Rodger Fox Big Band, NZSM Big Band and alongside Alex Sipiagin at last year's festival. Rooted in Bebop vocabulary but with a strong taste for modern concepts, Frank has an energetic style which blends tradition and innovation which has consistently won over listeners.

Joined by Drummer Sam MacKenzie who has quickly established himself in Wellington playing with many groups including the Rodger Fox Big Band and New Zealand Youth Jazz Orchestra, as well as established international artists such as Alex Sipiagin, Dick Oatts and Luis Bonilla.

The quartet will be playing innovative original material alongside some of their favourite repertoire with some of the forefront of New Zealand Jazz from all around the country.
