Come into the city for Christchurch's biggest and brightest street party - a spectacular celebration of architecture, community and food!

Christchurch has always had a powerful relationship with food and to celebrate this ongoing love FESTA is throwing a collective, creative street party involving thousands of Cantabrians, as well as visitors!

Free and open to all, FEASTA! will fire up your appetites and imaginations with family activities, music, performance, art, imaginative installations, markets, bars, pop-up restaurants and lots of great things to eat and drink.

In collaboration with Creative Director Barnaby Bennett, over 130 design and architecture students from across Australia and New Zealand, as well as NZIA and NZILA Canterbury branch members, have designed and fabricated imaginative and unique installations that explore the themes of the The Future of Food, Public Feasting, Feeding Waitaha Canterbury, Food Markets and Cottage Industries.

Come hungry!

Look out for:
A children’s parade of wearable art made from reused food packaging that will kick things off at 5.15pm (Creative Junk will run workshops in the lead up).

An Asian food market called Little Asia.
Unique bamboo structures for shared dining experiences.

A bar of the future, run by Punky Brewster, featuring unusual brews from Aotearoa producers; a Waitaha Canterbury bar, featuring locally produced brews.

A demonstration station and speaker’s corner made to look like a reality TV set with models of giant electric hobs and a mammoth coffee pot.

Weaving their food-related works into the celebration are artists Gaby Montejo, Rongomaiaia Te Whaiti, Josie Archer & Kosta Bogoievski and the multidisciplinary collaboration Kono for Kai, featuring cultural practitioners Benita Wakefield, Chelita Kahutianui Zainey and Amiria Perez.

Kono for Kai: 100 hand woven harakeke kono (small food baskets) filled with native plant seedlings and seeds will be available to the public in exchange for a koha of kai (non-perishable goods only please). All koha received will be gifted to a community group (TBC) for distribution to those in need in the community.

FESTA 2018 runs over Labour Weekend from 19-22 October, with major event FEASTA! on Saturday 20 October (rain date: 21 October). Additional events and full programme to be revealed!
