Mahinga kai is a term used by Ngāi Tahu to refer to the gathering of food and other resources, and the places these are gathered. To practice mahinga kai is also to protect its longevity. As we take those resources for a food source, what are we giving back to the whenua and future generations? Are we taking more than we need? How can we sustain these resources into the future while honouring our rights to gather kai?

Join Kākano as they discuss food sustainability and sovereignty; look through their maara kai (food gardens) and see a foraging demo.

FESTA 2018 is a public festival of architecture, design and food. Over the course of Labour Weekend workshops, talks, pop-up projects, family events, tours, live performance, artworks and more take place at various venues across the city.

Make sure you join us for our headline event, FEASTA!, a spectacular celebration of architecture, community and food, live for one night only on Saturday 20 October (rain date Sunday 21 October).
