Welcome to Enzemble NZ's inaugural concert! We will play three pieces by two giants of the classical world, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven.

Mozart - Overture to The Marriage of Figaro, K. 492
Mozart - Violin Concerto No. 5 in A, K. 219
Beethoven - Symphony No. 1 in C, Op. 21

Vesa-Matti Leppänen - violin
Sam Burstin - conductor

The fantastic Finnish Concertmaster of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Vesa-Matti Leppänen, has a new violin! Like the very finest instruments, it is old and Italian, and he makes a simply glorious sound.

We start the concert celebrating this match made in heaven with an appropriately bubbly piece, the Overture to Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro. Then, Vesa starrs as soloist for his 5th and final violin concerto in A major, full of joy, beauty and a rumbustious Turkish dance!

After the interval we play Beethoven's first symphony. Beethoven's genius lay in his ability to consistently and thrillingly push musical boundaries, reflecting his belief that humankind could and should grow into a fairer and more loving race.

His music is full of surprise, beauty and power, all of which are encapsulated in his first symphony. The opening chord, a dominant seventh, would have startled the first audience, and it serves as a warning that the journey Beethoven is about to take us on will be quite an adventure!

Enzemble NZ players are musicians from the NZSO, Orchestra Wellington, the Wellington Chamber Orchestra and the New Zealand School of Music. The idea is to play wonderful music for wonderful causes, and to have fun doing so!

All Enzemble NZ concerts are free to attend! All we ask is that you consider making a donation for Alzheimer's NZ. It is a charity close to the heart of the man who helped Vesa buy his wonderful violin.

Please like our page, share this event, and we'd love to see you at St Andrew's at 3pm on Sunday 21 October!
