Most of us want to make a difference. We see suffering, injustice and death, and are moved to do something. But working out what that ‘something’ is, let alone actually doing it, is a difficult problem. Many well intentioned acts make very little difference, some do more harm than good, but some have an astonishingly large impact.

Effective altruism is a research field and community which uses evidence and careful reasoning to seek out the very best ways of effectively addressing the world's most pressing problems such as global poverty, animal welfare, and risks to humanity's future.

This course applies ethical theories and critical thinking to analyse some of the world's most pressing issues. Most importantly, it will provide you with tools so you can take highly effective action.

Dr Catherine Low is a co-founder of Effective Altruism New Zealand, and manages Students for High-Impact Charity, a non-profit educating students on how to make a difference. Before her work in effective altruism she taught Science and Ethics at high school level and gained a PhD in physics from the University of Melbourne.
