Join Megan Tamati-Quennell, Curator of Modern & Contemporary Maori & Indigenous Art, for a floortalk and walk through of Détour by Michael Parekowhai, the major commission for the opening of Toi Art that fills the front/Threshold Gallery space. We will also be joined by the Friends of Christchurch Art Gallery for the talk and refreshments afterwards.

Megan’s talk – Generosity, conversation and collaboration – will focus on the approach undertaken by Michael Parekowhai for Détour, his commissioned exhibition. Her talk will highlight some of the conceptual drivers that underpin the exhibition as well as focus on some of the individual art works created and selected for inclusion in the show.

Détour is in essence a conversation with Marcel Duchamp, one of Michael Parekowhai’s major art influences, an influence Michael has been engaging with since art school. In simple terms Détour can be defined as a response to Marcel Duchamp’s Box in Valise, a significant work held in the art collection and gained by bequest. It is however much more than that. Michael’s projects are rarely simple or straightforward, they are instead projects of layered complexity.

Détour is an exhibition made up of many conversations across time and space; artist to artist, with artists both living and those not, with Michael’s family, the art world, the bicultural politic at Te Papa, with ethics, aesthetics and the politics of taste. It is large and inviting project that has a generosity of spirit that Megan will discuss.

It is also a collaborative project, where Michael worked with artists both conceptually and actually, with artists both living and those not, with Megan as the curator of the project, with Te Papa the institution and with the audience who are needed to complete the work. Like complexity, collaboration is a key element of Michael Parekowhai’s broader art practice.
