Join Simon Devitt for an illustrated talk on his practice as a photographer of architecture, people and place. Simon will discuss why he believes the other senses are so important in how we view and engage with place. Simon's images have been produced into several self published, award winning books, which he will also discuss.

Simon Devitt ( b.1973) was born down in a dead man’s town, the first kick he took was when he hit the ground.

Simon has no formal training in either Architecture or Photography, instead he has built a practice using his otherness to his advantage. In his own words:

“I capture what I see not only as 'an outsider looking in' but as an outsider 'exposing' beauty in situations where inherent beauty might be present but not articulated as a dramatic moment, or series of dramatic moments.”

His unique view to photography now takes him throughout Australasia and even further afield. His work is published in numerous national and international magazines, as well many books including Julia Gatley’s, ‘Long Live the Modern’ (2009), ’Group Architects: Towards a New Zealand Architecture’ (2010) and ’Athfield Architects’ (2012).

In 2011 Devitt collaborated on a book with Andrea Stevens published by Penguin, ’Summer Houses’.

In 2013 he launched his first self-published book ‘Portrait of a House’ which documented the Athfield’s Khandallah residence, Wellington.

City Talks is an ongoing series initiated by the New Zealand Institute of Architects Wellington Branch and presented in partnership with City Gallery Wellington. Its purpose is to foster discussion about architecture for a broader audience in a city that cares to openly discuss ideas relevant to our future.

The talk will be followed by refreshments.
