Artist, Architect and Academic Sarah Treadwell discusses her painting and print work which is informed by architecture, gender and the spatiality of surface.

Sarah recently retired as Associate Professor at the Auckland School of Architecture where for many years her teachings and interest were focused on Architectural drawing and representation, as well as issues of gender in architecture. Her research also investigated representation of architecture in colonial and contemporary images, particularly in 19thC NZ and the Pacific. This research now informs her practice as an artist, producing beguiling and elegant works in the medium of drawing and painting.

Dr Sarah Treadwell trained as an architect at Auckland University School of Architecture. She gained her registration as an Architect in 1978 and worked in New Zealand and overseas. In 1981 she joined the Auckland University School of Architecture as the first woman on permanent staff.

Her presence at the school was important for a generation of young male and female architects under her tutelage. In her teaching and through her research she championed drawing to inform architectural making encouraging students to look beyond obvious answers, to look deeper and develop their own approach to architecture, its making and representation.

Sarah has published on architectural representation, gender, the under representation of women in architecture, and the domestic. Her work in this field is highly esteemed and cited by many. Sarah has published in various books and journals including Architectural Theory Review, Architectural Design, Space and Culture and Interstices. She received the 2013 NZIA President’s Award for services to architecture. She is also a founding member of Architecture + Women and led the 2013 A+W symposium “Architecture in an Expanded Field”.

Sarah is also an artist, and her work was exhibited in 2015 in the Exhibition “Drawing is / not building: Roland Snooks, Sarah Treadwell, Simon Twose” in the Adam Art Gallery at Victoria University in Wellington.

In 2017, Sarah retired from teaching and continues her practice as an artist.
