‘Burn, Baby, Burn’ Burnout and Speedway Racing meeting starting at 4.30pm on Saturday, September 22, has been organised by Central Motor Speedway as another entertainment option for the thousands of visitors coming to the Alexandra Blossom Festival.

Less than half an hour up the Cromwell Gorge, Central Motor Speedway is the track for all of Central Otago and rated one of the South's best for competitor and spectators alike. With its nature amphitheatre around the track, Central Motor Speedway is the ideal venue for 'Central Otago's Fastest Family Show on Earth'.

“You could say that while the Blossom Festival is mostly about petals, this is pedals to the metal entertainment," says speedway promoter Jason Scott. "We’ve been especially careful not to get in the way of the official Blossom Festival programme by starting racing at 4.30pm with the burnout at 7pm.

“As we all know, it’s quite a tradition for car lovers to make an annual pilgrimage to the Blossom Festival. With Sunday’s ‘Cars in the Park’, we predict that this year there will be a lot in town. Rather than use Alexandra roads to show off their mint 1973 Holden repowered with a Chevy short block V8 and risk being slapped with a fine and loss of license for more than two seconds of ‘sustained loss of traction’, surely it’s much better to spin their wheels on the skid pan at Central Motor Speedway.

"An added incentive is the $1000 dollar prize money. We’re pretty much open to any vehicle from specialised burnout cars through hot rods, classic American and Aussie sixes and V8’s to modern cars. Entry forms are on www.centralmotorspeedway.co.nz or can be filled in on the night.

“We know from previous events that high revving cars engulfed in white smoke is a huge crowd pleaser for all ages and with good fields of sprintcars, six-shooters, saloons and youth-ministocks on the track after their winter break, Saturday promises to be an exciting, fun evening.

To whet appetites some of our racecars will be on the back of big rigs in the Grand Procession and we’ll be handing out a good number of free $10.00 adult passes to those lining Centennial Avenue. Everyone under 15 is free.”
