In 1848 Henry Baker Graham established the Otago News, Dunedin’s first newspaper, but found himself at odds with Captain William Cargill and aligned with the “malcontents”.

Richard Stedman focuses on events leading to the breaking of the Otago News in 1850, the death of its editor, the founding of the Otago Witness, and the region’s early printers.
