This class is ideal for people who want to begin working with clay. Ceramicist Julie Cromwell will introduce two different types of clay - grogged and smooth - and show how to prepare and use them.

You will explore different hand working methods and joining techniques, and be able to use the slab roller and moulds, or opt for hand building construction methods. At the end, you can colour your work using stains.

Julie will also discuss good studio practice, how to look after your work and information about the Quarry’s ceramic facilities. There is an hour's break for lunch - bring your own.

14 years and over.

Cost includes 2.5 kilo of clay and the firing of 2 pieces.

Once you've done this course, then you will be well equipped to join our Casual Clay days: Monday, 1pm - 9pm and Tuesday,  9am - 9pm, ($5 per class). Or consider our more advanced courses, offered periodically: Introduction to glazing; Ceramic wheel work (throwing); Sculpture – advanced, hand-building techniques; Press moulding and slip casting.
