Choral music from the 16th to 20th Centuries in honour of St Cecilia, patroness of musicians: Hymn to St. Cecilia, Benjamin Britten; Messe Solennelle de Sainte-Cécile (St Cecilia Mass), Gounod; also music by William Byrd, Handel, Johannes Jeep and Gerald Finzi.

Hymn to St. Cecilia is a setting of the W.H. Auden poem. Auden dedicated his poem to Britten, who completed his setting of it on 2 April 1942 on board a ship, while returning to England from New York. Britten's birthday happens to be the Feast Day of St Cecilia, 22 November.

That day also saw the premiere of Charles Gounod's first major work, the Messe Solennelle de Sainte-Cécile (St Cecilia Mass), at Saint-Eustache, Paris in 1855. Saint-Saëns, who was at the premiere, said of the mass, "this simplicity, this grandeur, this serene light which rose before the musical world like a breaking dawn, troubled people enormously...at first one was dazzled, then charmed, then conquered."

The Choir will be joined by Nicola Holt (soprano), Jamie Young (tenor), Daniel O'Connor (baritone) and Douglas Mews (organ), under the direction of Shawn Michael Condon. Tickets available from Eventfinda, choir members, and at the door on the day.
