Death of A Dream by Richard De Luca
Directed by Penelope Keegan
20 Apr–5 May

This play examines the two ‘dreams’ in Death of a Salesman – the American Dream, and Willy Loman’s personal dream. Willy’s businessman grandson, Bill, is still hoping to crack the big time.

Bill’s adult son, a drug addict, lives at home; his stepdaughter is a successful New York executive. They gather for Thanksgiving weekend, 2015, and struggle with the resulting catastrophic events.

American accents are a must.

The characters are as follows:

Bill Loman:
The son of Happy and grandson of Willy. He owns and manages a successful business but is looking for something that will take him to the higher realms of success. He is married to Carol and together they have a son, Art. He is stepfather to Suzy, Carol’s daughter from her first marriage. (59 years old)

Carol Loman:
Bill is her second husband and the co-owner of the business. Though she is not involved in the day to day operations, it was her inherited money that helped set up the business. Her first husband, Chris, died when Suzy was very young (age comparable to Bill’s)

Suzy Loman:
Carol’s daughter from her first marriage. She grew up in the Loman home but now lives in New York where she is a successful and driven finance professional working for a private equity firm. She is single. (34)

Art Loman:
The son of Bill and Carol. He is a mess and his father finds him very frustrating. He is single and unemployed. He once was a promising football player on track to a professional career; however, following a career-ending injury he is now addicted to painkillers. (30)

Peter Smyth:
The all-American - conventionally good-looking and self-confident. He attended a prestigious business school and then worked for a few years in a leading consulting firm in New York He was a college friend of Art’s, (playing on the same football team) though they are no longer in touch. Their lives have obviously taken very different paths. He has been seeing Suzy casually while in New York. (30)

Naomi Williams:
Carol’s sister-in-law (Chris’s sister). She is still very much part of the family though only just tolerated by Bill. As Suzy’s aunt, she considers herself unofficial godmother to both Suzy and Art. She lives very close to the Lomans.

Happy:
ill’s father, played by the actor playing the role of Peter, but with age appropriate costuming. He appears in a dream sequence.

Hospital staff:
This could be played by the Stage Manager or one of the crew.
