Audio Foundation is pleased to present Anne La Berge and David Dramm (Amsterdam) with special guests Hermione Johnson, Sean Martin-Buss, Ivan Mrsic and Paul Buckton.

Anne La Berge’s passion for the extremes in both composed and improvised music has led her to storytelling and sound art as her sources of musical inspiration.

Her music gathers the elements on which her reputation is based: ferocious and far-reaching virtuosity, microtonal textures and melodies, and her unique array of percussive flute techniques, all combined with interactive electronic processing and text.

She performs regularly as a soloist, with the ensemble Maze. She is a founding artist of Splendor Amsterdam, a collective of musicians who have transformed an old bathhouse in Amsterdam into a cultural mecca, where she regularly produces and shares small scale concerts with international guests.

La Berge’s own music has evolved in parallel to her organising, and the flute has become only one element in a sound world that includes computer samples, the use of spoken text and electronic processing.

She can be heard on the Largo, Artifact, Etcetera, Hat Art, Frog Peak, Einstein, X-OR, Unsounds, Canal Street, Rambo, esc.rec., Intackt and Data labels which include recordings with Ensemble Modern, United Noise Toys, Fonville/La Berge, Rasp/Hasp, Bievre/La Berge, Apricot My Lady, Big Zoom, Corkestra, La Berge/Williamson and Maze.

The miracle of her sound technique is supported by, among other things, different lip-positions, attacks, ways of breathing, distance from the microphone – everything has been foreseen and elaborated... Her textures are often two-voiced. It is all so complicated that it defies description and yet it sounds very natural, like a bird’s song. Muusika, Tallin.

David Dramm (b.1961) was born in Illinois, growing up in San Diego, California. The international press has dubbed him an ‘American iconoclast.’ The Dutch press describe his music as ‘the ground-breaking terrain between Charles Ives, Jimi Hendrix and Lou Reed.’

As a composer, singer, guitarist and lyricist Dramm “moves effortlessly between the worlds of classical music, improvisation, rock music, theater and dance.” His composition studies began with Robert Erickson and, later, with Louis Andriessen and Earle Brown.

His music has been performed regularly throughout Europe and elsewhere. Dramm’s daringly unconventional pop arrangements for artists such as John Cale, Low and Junkie XL have been widely broadcast and recorded.Recordings of his music are available on BVHaast, Vanguard Classics, Challenge, ATTACCA, Einstein, New World, Composer’s Voice and X-OR.

Anne La Berge and David Dramm will perform as a duo and in improvised combinations with local guests:
- Hermione Johnson – piano
- Sean Martin-Buss – reeds
- Ivan Mrsic – invented instruments
- Paul Buckton – guitar

Doors open 8pm.
