In November and December 1918 741 people died of influenza in Wellington, and most of them were buried in Karori Cemetery. The 1918 Influenza Project is holding two days to commemorate and remember these people, most of whom have lain forgotten and ignored for the past 100 years.

The Mayor Justin Lester will be speaking at 11am on the 18th, followed by Hon Grant Robertson. There will then be a public talk by Professor Geoffrey Rice, the authority on the influenza epidemic in New Zealand.

Volunteer guides will then be taking tours around the main burial sites, and telling some of the stories of those who died. Details of the commemoration programme are on the project website, as are more than 170 stories of people who died.
